Daily Homework Reading:
Our goal is to support your involvement in the development of your child’s literacy by connecting school and home. Your child is very excited about sharing their progress with you, and the more we work together to make literacy an important and celebrated part of your child’s life, the richer your child will be.
At the beginning of the reading process many children read by memory. Please keep in mind that reading is a memory process, and the memorizing of easy patterned text is a desirable early reading behavior. Memorized text is like a database that your child is able to work with for learning how to apply reading strategies. Without this data bank, they will become dependent upon sounding words out. Although this is a valid strategy, there are other strategies that need to be developed for your child to become a fluent reader. As your child moves through reading levels, you will see less memorization and more recognition of words, patterns and language structure.
Here are the steps to follow when your child brings home Red Reading Folder:
A first grade spelling list will come each Monday. This list consists of 10 words which correlate with our curriculum. There will be a nightly word study homework assignment which should be completed and returned to school the following day.
The word study test will be given on Friday unless we have a short week due to a holiday. Please encourage and help your child and help to study.

Dear Parents,
Craven County Schools is pleased to let you know that a comprehensive,
standards-aligned math practice program, iXL, is available to all students. This
program offers unlimited problems in thousands of skills. One of the best things
about iXL is that students can access it from school and from home!
iXL is not a program that is meant to replace math instruction from your child’s
teacher but is a valuable tool to help support the math skills that are being taught.
To get unlimited practice, tracking, and awards, students need to simply sign in to
their iXL account.
Your child can access his/her account at https://www.ixl.com/signin/craven by
entering the assigned username and password. If a student does not know the
username or password, he/she can get this information from the teacher. After
signing in, students click on the appropriate grade level to select skills to practice.
Remember to bookmark this page for easy access.
If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher
Sincerely,
Dr. Annette Brown

Here are the steps to follow when your child brings home Red Reading Folder:
- Your child is to practice the book again and again until they are able to read it fluently and smoothly and are able to tell you what the story is about. If your child has difficulty reading a word, try one of the strategies in the folder. Ask what makes sense so that reading is a thinking process. If after trying these strategies the word is not deciphered, supply the word. Keep reading fun!
- As the year progresses reading homework might include work to further your child’s comprehension such as: Story Maps, Thinking Charts, and Book Reports etc. When you see these coming home in the folder, please be sure your child completes the work in addition to reading their books.
- Sign the “Reading Log” when your child can read fluently. It is important that we keep the connection between home and school.
- Your child is to bring the books back everyday. New books will not be given for practice until the old books are returned.
- The best way for children to learn to read is to be read to, be read with, and practice reading alone. Even if you don’t receive a book in the Red Folder, it is assumed that you are making every effort to read, read, read, every day
