What We Are Learning
May 1, 2015
In reading we have been learning about world-wide habitats of plants and animals as we read informational texts. We are identifying key details that describe each habitat and the plants and animals that live in each habitat. Finally, we have learned about adaptations the plants and animals have that allow them to live in their environment using mainly key details, photographs and captions.
In science we will learn about motion and balance in May. We will read nonfiction materials about forces from pushing and pulling. Then we will do several experiments observing what happens to both moving and stationary objects when a force acts upon it. Finally, we will move objects with magnets and learn about magnetic properties.
As mathematicians we are learning to add and subtract with two-digit numbers. We will also identify 3-dimensional shapes and learn about fractions by cutting shapes into “equal shares”.
In writing we are wrapping up our informational unit. We will take an assessment writing an informational piece about a marine animal we have studied writing facts that teach the reader. We will also use a variety of nonfiction print convention such as bold words, headings, diagrams with labels and captions to also teach the reader. Lastly, we will review some of the writing genres we have studies this year.

April 13, 2015
In reading, we will focus on identifying causes and effects. In literature stories we will name the causes of events and character feelings. We will also identify the effects of events in those stories. In nonfiction texts, we will identify causes and effects of environmental issues.
In science we have learned all about natural resources such as rocks and soils. We learned the products that can be made from these materials. Now, we will look at how people can change the environment by caring for and conserving natural resources. We will discuss recycling and reusing products. Last, we will study natural habitats on earth. We will learn about different Earth habitats and the plants and animals that call these places home.
As mathematicians we are learning to measure using non-standards units. We will learn 3-dimensionalfigures such as spheres, rectangular prisms, cubes and pyramids. We will identify these figures, name objects that contain these shapes in our world, and identify attributes of each 3-dimensioonl figure.
In writing we are becoming nonfiction authors. We have already written pieces that teach the reader on topics in which we are alreadyexperts. In April, we will learn how to do research and then write informational pieces using the research to compose facts. We will be researching different sea creatures and then wirte about these marine animals.

What We’re Up To!
In this grading period we will be welcoming your child to school and inviting them to become a reader, writer, citizen and mathematician!
In reading, we are asking and answering questions about key details in a text. In literature, we are asking questions that point to the story elements so we can better understand what is happening as we read. In nonfiction, or informational, texts, we will ask about what the whole text is about to demonstrate understanding about what the author is teaching.
As writers, we are reviewing the alphabet letters and sounds along with correct letter formation. Afterwards, we are diving into personal narrative stories! Your child will learn to write a story about a time from his/her life with a clear beginning, middle and end along with special details.
Our math work is focused on numeration. We are counting numbers in order starting at various numbers, identifying numbers that come after a given number, and are identifying tens and ones. We are very busy learners!
As citizens, we are learning what it means to be a citizen of our school and class communities. We are establishing rules and procedures. We are also learning about rules and leaders in the home and community. This will lead us into a study of families and roles in a family. Finally, we will study how families earn money, save and spend money. Finally, we will learn how we rely on families to fill our needs and wants using goods and services.
